RENT is by far the most exuberant and original American musical to come along in a decade, single-handedly redefining Broadway. It swept all major theatre awards in 1996, for a total of 19 awards, including the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize. Some call RENT a "Bohemian Rhapsody," referring to the parallel drawn between RENT’s story and that of Puccini’s La Boheme. Master Broadway composer Steven Sondheim says that its late author, Jonathan Larson, was one of the few people today who has successfully blended contemporary pop with theater music.

RENT is a very ‘90s musical sensation that has moved audiences to the edge, while capturing the heart and spirit of a generation. It’s gritty, pulsating, and poignant story celebrates a community of artists in New York’s East Village as they struggle with the soaring hopes and tough and realities of today’s world. Through Larson’s fresh and dynamic score, RENT’s characters reveal the passion of their convictions tenderness of as they learn the that love, friendship and community are very powerful.

RENT has taken both critics and audiences around the country by storm, leaving a surge of new energy and vibrancy in its path. Frank Rich of The New York Times exclaims that "RENT came out of nowhere to earn the most ecstatic raves of any American musical in the two decades since A Chorus Line." Jack Kroll of Newsweek declares that "RENT is the breakthrough musical for the ‘90s. (Larson’s) versions of gospel, rock, reggae, and even a tango, add up to a brilliant portrait of the crazy cubistic face of today’s pop." Clearly, there’s nothing else quite like RENT. We hope you’ll join us for this remarkable and innovative production!
