| RENT, which will be
the spring show, March 23-28, is the late Jonathan Larson's contemporary re-imagining of
Puccini's La Boheme as it might be lived by a gaggle of young artists in New York City's
East Village, looking for love, battling poverty and AIDS, and struggling to make their
mark on the world. The show, which won the 1996 Tony Award for best musical and Pulitzer Prize for best drama, has become the Hair of the 1990s, changing the texture of Broadway musicals from large and lavish to small and exuberant. Its success, which has been recreated on the road, is a phenomenon not unlike the Grateful Dead, with Rent groupies seeing the show over and over. |
