10/27/98

the march

For the first time in a quarter of a century, there is a spontaneous, grass roots effort underway in the United States to organize a massive political action in Washington, D.C.

Currently known as the March On Congress To Pass the Hate Crimes Bill, the movement is calling on people to come to the U.S. Capitol building on January 6, 1999 to welcome Congress to Washington and to demand immediate passage of long-delayed federal hate crimes legislation. The effort, believed to be the first of its magnitude to originate and organize on the Internet, was sparked by the 105th Congress's failure to enact hate crimes legislation and by the recent murder of 21-year-old, gay college student Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming.

January 6 is the day the 106th Congress will convene for its first
session and is three months to the day from when Matthew Shepard was kidnapped , tortured and left hanging from a fense on a Wyoming prairie. Shepard died as a result of his injuries six days later.

The movement's goal is to bring thousands of people to the Capitol
building and House and Senate office buildings in Washington on January 6 to protest, and to lobby representatives and senators for the bill's enactment.

10/26/98 i hate daylight savings time, 6pm feels like midnight.  ugh!

i cleaned "the room" yesterday, can you believe it charro?  LOL!  i actually put more stuff away.  i found this picture of shaun from when we were in new york, and one of joi & julia in costa mesa.

and i put up the "talkin broadway" review of tls.  god this made me want to run right out and see it again.  send good vibes to steve & ronda to get this puppy up and running in l.a!

and in honor of ant's birthday today i put up this picture from his last in new york - happy birthday anthony :-)

10/25/98 check the TLS closing pictures section, i just couldn't resist doing this, it cracked me up :-)

happy birthday sabs!

adrian (the boy looks tired) and andy (the boy looks blurry - haha) in london, thanx bex :-)

10/23/98 so since i couldn't go to san diego, i put more pictures up from closing.

and another one of steve's birthday party, i love shemeka in this one :-)

TGIF.

10/22/98 i worked late and missed the show in san diego.  arrrgggghhhh!

10/21/98 they killed the bill, in spite of the fact that polls say 75% of us want it passed.  it's all politics.  it's not over, don't let it be over.

laura is in europe for 2 weeks promoting her new single titled "if you buy this record your life will be better".  ???  :-)   her album is being released in early december.

and all you WIMPS, karen t. is going to vlos with me, so there!  haha!

going to san diego tonite to see steve?

10/20/98 here's hoping congress does the right thing today.

so i got to work yesterday and had a surprise message (voice mail) waiting from jimbo - i talked to him for a long time in the afternoon, he sends his love to everyone  :-)

christian has arrived in seattle :-)

fosse:  so far it's me, bry & roberta.  anyone else?

vlos is "vampire lesbians of sodom" (for those of you who asked). i know nothing about it, only that way back in pittsburgh, in the paper they put up a picture of christian & kirk in rent labeled 'vampire lesbians of sodom'.  so i want to see it - LOL.  it's playing in west hollywood - c'mon, let's go!  write me  :-)

10/19/98 one more day to call gingrich and lott.  if you haven't done it yet, please do it today.  the numbers are below.  if you want to send cards to matthew's family, send them to:

10/14/98 i put up some more of steve's birthday pictures.   am keeping my fingers crossed about the show moving to l.a.

check mike's page (in the 'news') for some new seattle/vancouver pictures.

Meet the Cast of RENT in SEATTLE

Friday, October 16, 12 noon
Come meet the Benny cast of RENT, get autographs, and talk about the show at
Borders Books & Music in Downtown Seattle

that's all, i've got more government officials to write.

10/13/98 "at least now if you try - matthew's death won't be in vain..."

here's a great suggestion from russ:

get your congressmen's e-mail address at:

http://www.ifas.org/activist/index.html

tell them to move NOW on the Hate Crimes Prevention Act and say you want it to be called the "Matthew Shepard Law".  in memory of matthew, let's push for national protection for all of us and, at the same time, not let anyone forget what Matthew Shepard endured. we can all do something positive in his name by moving this forward. tell your congressmen that you are horrified by the hate - crime violence in the united states and, don't ask, DEMAND a national "Matthew Shepard Law".

and here's a sample letter:

As a current California resident I want to voice my complete disgust to you over what happened to Matthew Shephard, the 21 year old college student in Wyoming who was beaten, burned, and left for dead last week.  His death was a senseless act that has left me horrified.

I have never been one to fight for legislating behavior, but this homophobic behavior by supposed adults has GOT to stop.  To see a young bright life like Matthew's extinguished so early is a tragedy.  Please vote FOR the Hate Crimes Prevention Act, and rename it the Matthew Shepard Act, so that he is remembered and something good comes from this terrible act.

I will be closely watching your voting record on this matter...

Sincerely,

"the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."

here's some pictures from "the last session" closing (thanks marie-reine :-).  this show needs to tour, now more than *ever*.

and some more from seattle from amber & suzanne :-)

and some more utter randomness.

10/12/98 "the last session" in laguna has closed {sigh}.  lotsa people were down there yesterday - me, amber, teri, stacey, tina, lindsey, deme, lori, carol, shemeka, marie-reine, mandy, charmi, ed, elizabeth, dan and we took *tons* of pictures.  it was a wonderful show and it's been a wonderful run.  we're very hopeful at this point that the show will be moving to l.a. in the near future.  until then, joey and steve, see you in san diego on the 21st.

the entire second act i couldn't stop thinking about matthew, and couldn't stop crying.  when i got home i had messages from several of you who haven't heard about him, so i'm posting the story here.   he died this morning, and i'm heartsick.

you can sign petitions to the family or to certain government officials regarding the hate crimes law at e-thepeople - go to "crime and law enforcement" then follow the options.

10/11/98 i added a "last session" link over there on the menu, down at the bottom.  today's the last show in laguna, but certainly not the last show if we can do anything about it!

i've put up some of suzanne's pictures from portland and seattle - hmmm - think maybe they liked adrian up there?  :-)

this gay bashing of matthew shepard in wyoming is making me ill.  you can send messages to him and his family at the hospital at mshepard@libra.pvh.org.  this stuff needs to stop, it just needs - to - stop.

10/10/98 i'm back from the trip from hell or the flight to heaven and stayin' put for awhile, all the business travel is over so i can play again :-)  i'm going to shoot for sro for "the last session" tomorrow.

amber, joey & i are going to sabs' show on the 17th, anyone who wants to can come along.  you may think these are funky little college productions but keep in mind that erica munoz was in sabs' show we saw a couple months ago - and she's in rent on broadway now!  and sabs is great, so join us :-)

more paul - "play on" in seattle :-)

and happy birthday adam!   *mwah*!

10/7/98 happy birthday tony & jenny :-)

here's some more pictures from "the last session" - w00 :-)

and a message from the laguna playhouse:
