Jesse L. Martin Jesse L. Martin may have set Ally McBeal’s pulse racing last season with his smooth ways, but the handsome actor, who played Dr. Greg Butters, insists he wasn’t born with a sexy bedside manner. "I’m from the Blue Ridge Mountains, and for years I sounded like a hillbilly," says Martin, who was recruited by Dick Wolf, creator and executive producer of NBC’s Law & Order, to play Detective Eddie Jordan on the hit show this fall. "Jesse is a major new star," says Wolf, singling out the actor’s "magnetism and sex appeal." Martin insists that trading in his stethoscope for a policeman’s shield won’t slow him down.
