"Few Broadway
musicals make the news these days. "Rent" instantly set the entertainment
media buzzing in 1996, when its creator, Jonathan Larson, died the day before the show was
supposed to open off-Broadway. Not long after, critics went gaga, celebrities scalped
tickets, young theater geeks lined up for discounted tickets (a great publicity stunt),
and this rock-fired show has been selling out across the country ever since."
